Selma Alaçam, Different Conditioning (Video Still), 2009

Selma Alaçam wuchs als Tochter einer deutschen Mutter und eines türkischen Vaters in Mannheim auf. Ein Leben zwischen zwei Kulturkreisen, das sich in ihren Video- und Kelim-Arbeiten sowie Fotografien niederschlägt. Dabei schneidet sie die großen, universellen Themen unserer Zeit an, die Frage nach Identität und Interkulturalität, nach Zugehörigkeit und der Prägung der eigenen Person. Mit feinem Humor und beeindruckender Intensität kommentiert sie kulturelle Erwartungshaltungen, Eigenheiten und Konflikte.

Immer wieder drückt Selma Alaçam im Video „Different Conditioning“ einen schwarzen Bundesadler-Stempel in ihr Gesicht. Vor dem dunklen Hintergrund und mit den Haaren aus dem Gesicht gebunden, rückt die weiße Fläche ihrer Haut in den Fokus, die unter der schwarzen Stempelfarbe des Nationalsymbols zunehmend verschwindet, bis die Künstlerin nahezu unsichtbar wird. Der Prozess des Verschwindens, aber auch die Vehemenz, mit der das Verschwinden durch die eigene Hand erfolgt, berührt und gibt keine einfachen Antworten.

Auch die Serie „heartstrings II“ arbeitet mit Überlagerung durch Farbe: Mit schwarzem Sprühlack übersprüht Alaçam hier Kelimteppiche, die sie zuvor mit Buchstaben bedeckt hat, die Schriftzeilen aus Popsongs bilden, die für sie von persönlicher Bedeutung sind. Und die gewebten Muster des Kelims, in welche die Weberin ihre persönlichen Gedanken hineinarbeitete, überliefert in jahrhundertealter Tradition, verschwinden, gleich dem Gesicht der Künstlerin, unter der schwarzen Farbe. Allein durch die Schrift des Songs, westlich geprägter Emotionsträger der Popkultur, scheinen diese Spuren türkischer Tradition und persönlicher Emotion hindurch.

Vom Super-8-Film der elterlichen Hochzeit und Familienfotos bis hin zu Youtube Videos und Interviews hebt Selma Alaçam auch in ihrer Material- und Quellenwahl die Identitätssuche über die persönliche Standortbestimmung hinaus und hinterfragt, was muslimische Identität zwischen den Kulturen in Deutschland und international bestimmt. Vom 10. September bis zum 29. Oktober zeigt die galerie postel in Hamburg Videokunst, Kelim-Arbeiten und Fotografien der Karlsruher Künstlerin.
