Üppige Natur überwuchert das Eiland, auf das sich Robinson Crusoe gerettet hat und nur mühsam kämpft sich die in Seenot geratene Klasse in Jules Vernes Roman „Zwei Jahre Ferien“ durch das Dickicht des Waldes. Manches Büro, manches Firmenfoyer, Schwimmbad oder Gewächshaus bemüht sich redlich, mit Palmen, Gummibäumen oder Farnen ein wenig von dem Gefühl der Wildnis dieser Natur in den städtischen Raum zu holen und lädt den Besucher ein, sich auf ein paar Quadratmetern in die Südsee hineinzudenken. Doch die gebauten Südseewelten sind ebenso wenig real wie die literarischen oder die Bilder, die sie im Kopf hervorrufen.
Simon Halfmeyer sammelt den Urwald im städtischen Raum. Aus seinem stetig wachsenden Archiv aus Pflanzenbildern, die er in Zeitungen und Publikationen findet, aus Fotos und Architekturen, konstruiert er neue Welten, Bilder von Südsee und Urwald, von wuchernden Pflanzen und wuchernder Architektur. Es sind Expeditionen in eine menschengeschaffene Wildnis, Traumbilder und Utopien einer Natur, die schon in ihrer Entstehung menschengemacht und nicht natürlich war. Expetopia ist die Einladung zu einer Expedition in diese Utopie.
